This book is a follow-up to the first “Seed-Stock,” which concentrated on Quality Fobes Abbekerk Gay and her descendants. “Seed-Stock-II” reminisces about other cattle and some of the people that I have worked with and known over the past half-century.It begins with Paclamar Astronaut, followed by Paclamar Bootmaker, Lakefield Fobes Delight, and then, Whirlhill Q Rag Apple Ariel. They are followed by a number of other breed “greats”, before closing with the story of Henry F. du Pont’s fascinating “Winterthur”.The interesting thing to me, and I hope it will be to you, is that these pages allow time to go back and study not only what the cattle were, but also where they came from and what impact they have had on the breed. The auction sales, the farm visits for booking dispersals and making consignment sale selections, the shows, the countless meetings at all levels, the work in the pedigree office (beginning while still in high school) as well as the early years directly with the cattle, all have provided ingredients for a full and, quite often, exciting career. Some of the experiences that resulted from these activities are reflected herein. They bring back, as you might expect, many special memories. All through the years, my admiration for the Holstein cow, and the people associated with her, has been constantly reinforced by my exposure to them.Perhaps these pages will help explain, to any and all who may wish to know, where today’s amazingly high production cows and great show cows have come from. Present-day cattle are, quite simply, the end product from generations and generations of careful matings by people who have, down through the years, “Bought the best and bred them better”.This is a fifty and more year “ run” – so perhaps we had better get started. I hope you enjoy the trip.
